Hreflang is a HTML attribute that can be used to create a site that uses multiple languages. Google uses hreflang to determine which version of the site is shown to specific countries of language speakers.

In response to a Reddit thread, Google's John Mueller said that you should limit the number of pages created with hreflang to those that are absolutely critical & valuable.
